Safety First: A Cautionary Tale

It is standard (and required) procedure for any LWYC skipper to check the weather conditions and forecast before sailing, and to cancel a sail if conditions look threatening.

The Smithsonian website has an article on what happens when racers get ‘Go Fever’ in the face of threatening conditions. On a disastrous day in 2015, an afternoon thunderstorm in Mobile Bay suddenly intensified to hurricane strength–in the middle of a sailing regatta.

So, the next time you are disappointed when a skipper cancels because of threatening weather, read this article. You can access it by clicking on either this link or the picture above.

Get Ready for the Sailing Academy!

Our next Sailing Academy class, Fundamentals of Sailing, starts July 10. There are a couple of spots left, so if you are interested in learning to sail, get in touch with Jeff Sadler (208-484-6652, sallybear@yahoo.com) before July 4!

In honor of the upcoming class, David Veeneman went online and tracked down the original ‘Points of Sail’ chart that a person or persons unknown taped to the forward bulkhead in the Hiatus cabin. Click on the thumbnail at the beginning of this post (or click here) to see the graphic full-size. If you’re a sailor, you’ll get a belly-laugh from this sarcastic, tongue-in-cheek look at the classic points-of-sail diagram. And if you’re not yet a sailor, join the class–we’ll be talking about this chart in the second session!
